Whip up this low-carb appetizer that’s not only delicious but super-easy to make with no cooking required!

I have loved cottage cheese since I was a kid. My mom served it to me as an afterschool snack, topped with Harvard beets. Not exactly the most common thing for a child to eat—but I was no ordinary child. I loved how the deep burgundy beet juice turned the cottage cheese a bright pink color! I still do.

Because I have such a penchant for cottage cheese, I’m always looking for new ways to enjoy it. This cottage cheese dip recipe is one of the easiest and most flavorful I’ve found! It comes together amazingly quickly, yet it tastes like a complicated chef’s dish. You get that mild tang of cottage cheese without the texture of the curds—which I adore but many people dislike. The silky-smooth consistency of this dip is laced with the simple yet delicious combo of savory garlic and onion powders, highlighted by the fresh zip of dill. Overall, it’s a light, creamy, perfectly balanced flavor profile that complements everything from crudité to chips and pretzels.

I love that this dip is a bit lighter than those that use sour cream or another high-fat ingredient. I make it whenever friends are coming over for drinks—and sometimes just for myself when I’m in the mood for snacks in place of lunch. It’s so easy to change up the ingredients for a variety of tastes that it never becomes boring!

Tips for tailoring your dip

First, a food processor is ideal for making this dip quickly and easily. If you don’t have one, use a hand mixer to get that smooth, evenly mixed consistency.

Next, let’s talk ingredient swaps. You can use plain, whole milk Greek yogurt in place of the cottage cheese, but your dip won’t be quite as thick. Better yet, use some of both for the thickest, dreamiest consistency. If a lower fat content is more important to you than a thick dip, go ahead and sub in low-fat or nonfat dairy products.

If fresh dill doesn’t appeal to you, try other fresh herbs like basil, chives, or parsley. Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce for a kick of heat. Sprinkle some sweet, hot, or smoked paprika on top for a unique twist.

Opting for minced fresh garlic and onions instead of the powders will amp up the flavor profile with deeper savory notes. Mixing in finely chopped celery or cucumber will add texture and freshness. Finally, drizzle a little olive oil overtop your dip just before serving for a restaurant-quality presentation.

How do I store leftovers?

Store leftover cottage cheese dip in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Give it a good stir when you’re ready to enjoy it. You can technically freeze this dip for up to 3 months—but note that the texture will become grainy or separated and the flavors will dull. Thaw overnight in the fridge.
