Skip the artificial ingredients and make your own Sugar-Free Keto Cool Whip instead. It’s perfect for making quick and easy desserts.

Growing up, we always had those iconic blue tubs of Cool Whip in our fridge. My mother adored the stuff and spooned it over gelatin desserts, pies, and puddings. I certainly wasn’t complaining. I loved it just as much and would often sneak a naughty spoonful or two straight from the tub.
But oh, how things have changed! These days, I wouldn’t dream of bringing that topping into my home. One glance at the ingredients list—corn syrup, hydrogenated vegetable oil, and modified food starch, to name a few—and you’ll understand why. It boggles the mind how this can even be considered food.
That said, I still feel a twinge of nostalgia whenever I spot Cool Whip at the store. So why not make my own? The great thing about this recipe (besides its velvety texture and cool, creamy flavor) is that it’s denser than regular whipped cream, which means it holds its shape beautifully, making it perfect for layered desserts. With only three ingredients, this rich and subtly sweet topping comes together in the blink of an eye. Just goes to show that with a little culinary creativity, we can enjoy our favorite treats in a more wholesome way.

How to use your topping
I don’t blame you if you go ahead and dig right in with a spoon, but just know that there are other ways to savor the creamy goodness of this topping! For starters, you can use it to crown all kinds of desserts or serve it as a dip for fresh berries—pretty much like you would with whipped cream. Where it truly shines, however, is in layered desserts. Try it in your tiramisu, strawberry shortcake, parfaits, icebox cakes, and trifle recipes. You can also use it to whip up an easy no-bake cheesecake.
Want to give your whipped topping some extra flavor? Add in a few drops of vanilla or almond extract. You can also stir in some unsweetened jam or even a dash of cocoa powder or instant espresso. With this topping in the fridge, making a quick dessert is truly child’s play.

How do I store leftovers?
Transfer leftovers to an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 3 days. Though the topping can also be frozen in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months, bear in mind that the texture will be slightly grainy upon thawing.

How much does this make, would it be equal to 8oz container of cool whip? Or would I need to double the recipe…. Thank you
Hi Jessie, this should make around 2 cups so 16 oz.
@Sue M, how much did it make? Was it comparable to 8 Oz container of cool whip? My recipe calls for 8 Oz tub of cool whip but looking for keto sub… thanks
I turned this into ice cream instead & it was delicious I left out the cream cheese but used Swerve powdered sugar & a tsp of alcohol free vanilla then put it in a smaller tupperware container with a lid & popped it into the freezer.
Sounds Yummy Kenna
Can this be frozen like store bought cool whip? I have a pie recipe that you freeze. Thanks
Yes, it can be frozen, but it might be a bit less fluffy when thawed—just give it a quick re-whip before using, it should work like a charm.
This is AMAZING! I recently saw *sugar free* cool whip at the store but of course it’s not really keto so was looking for options when I found your recipe. This is a game changer and can be used in so many recipes. Wonderful!!! Thank you : )
I am so glad, thanks for the comment Joyce!
How much is considered a serving
Hi Nicki, I used about a quarter-cup scoop per serving.
I can’t wait to make this!! Can I use whipped cream cheese and is it 8 carbs or am I missing something?
Yes, you can use whipped cream cheese, and it should still be around 8 carbs total
