Let me share the best-kept coleslaw secret: this savory, sugar-free, totally keto homemade coleslaw dressing!

Ahhh, a good coleslaw made with some tangy, creamy, down-home handcrafted coleslaw dressing. I so love it. After all, a good homemade coleslaw is a lovely play of textures and flavors all within one great cold slaw. It’s a naturally crunchy, creamy, acidic, salty, fatty, and zesty side that tastes great plopped down beside some steamin’ hot barbecued ribs or a platter of crispy fried chicken. And it makes sandwiches taste divine. I love layering it across a melty ham and cheese sandwich to jazz it up with some yummy, creamy, acidic crunch.

But I think with all the ho-hum store-bought and restaurant versions of coleslaws out there, people might have forgotten how delightfully cool and satisfying a coleslaw made with a homemade dressing can be. For lots of folks, nailing the ultimate coleslaw dressing can feel like chasing a rainbow. That’s because some recipes go overboard on the sugar, while others go overboard on the vinegar.

But this easy keto coleslaw dressing is a real game-changer. This is a truly savory coleslaw experience of a dressing made with just the right hints of creamy and acidic without any sugar at all — meaning you can sweeten it up just to your tastes with your favorite keto sweetener.

Sweet and savory keto add-ins

If you prefer your coleslaw with a touch of sweetness, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to give that up on the keto diet, either! This sugar-free base is the perfect blank slate for adding in other sweet, savory, or creamy additions you might enjoy. Add a few drops of liquid monk fruit, a couple teaspoons of powdered allulose, or a dash of keto-friendly maple syrup substitute if you want that classic sweet-and-tangy combo.

Looking for even more flavor? Some real bacon pieces stirred into this dressing give it the feel and flavor of a hot bacon dressing served cold, and will really play nicely off the flavors in this dressing. Alternatively, a couple of dashes of Tabasco sauce or some red pepper flakes will give this a welcome kick of heat. You can even fold in extras like crushed toasted walnuts for some welcome crunch.

How do I store leftovers?

You can store this sugar-free coleslaw dressing in an airtight jar or container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. It may thicken slightly in the fridge, so just give it a quick stir before using. Once you toss it with cabbage, the coleslaw itself is best enjoyed within 2–3 days, as the cabbage will begin to release water and soften over time. You cannot freeze this dressing. It would be like trying to freeze oil and vinegar, literally.

Similar recipes to try

If you’re looking for other keto-friendly slaw-style sides inspired by this dressing, PepperPorch has got you covered. This Low-Carb Chipotle Lime Mexican Coleslaw offers a smoky and spicy variation on coleslaw. For a very traditional coleslaw recipe, try this Easy Keto Coleslaw. It has its own sweet version of this keto coleslaw dressing that’s made with lemon juice, garlic powder, and a touch of erythritol. For a delicious cold slaw with even more crunch, you’ll love this Healthy Broccoli Slaw that’s made with broccoli, cabbage, and almonds.
